The Justice Project has been able to help extensively through a variety of partnerships and service projects in our community. Here is a listing of some of the ways we served and helped folks last year, and ways we are continuing to help this year.
Tacoma Rescue Mission - Justice Project partners with TRM to homeless individuals in Pierce County. On the last weekend of the month, Justice Project team members help prepare and serve meals, clean, wash dishes, and bus tables.
Habitat for Humanity - More than one hundred people completed orientation at the Champions Centre to work on projects and homes with Habitat. Twelve homes were built in 2009 in the Larabee Terrace project with the help of our volunteers from the Justice Project. Team members did everything from cleaning, painting, caulking, hammering and framing to serving at Habitat projects elsewhere. Volunteers continue to help with Habitat building projects in the area.
Los Angeles Dream Center - A dozen Justice Project team members traveled to LA for a week to work at the Dream Center in it's outreach programs. From preparing meals for the homeless, to handing out groceries at mobile food bank sites, the team labored alongside other volunteers from all over the world. This year another team is preparing for a week at the Dream Center in August.
Paint Tacoma Beautiful - Dozens of people from the Justice Project team helped prepare homes for new paint last year. Extensive yard renovations were done on many different homes throughout the region. The same team members also helped with home renovations and minor repairs on the homes of senior citizens and disabled or seriously ill people in the area who needed the help desperately. This year, our team is already preparing to help once again.
Back to School Supply Party - Partnering with social service agencies and area donors, the Justice Project team hosts the annual Back to School Bash for foster children in Pierce County every August. Free backpacks and school supplies are handed out, along with school uniforms, books, and other donated items that equip these kids for success as they begin a new school year.
Christmas Help - The Champions Foundation collected hundreds of new toys and gift items that were distributed through Need A Break Services, and area organizations to children in need in the community. The Justice Project team also hosted a dinner and decorated Jefferson House, a transition housing program for formerly homeless individuals and families. In Bellevue, we were able to provided Christmas stockings and gifts for women who sought shelter through the Eastside Domestic Shelter agency. Western State Hospital, a care center for mentally ill individuals, were the recipients of 75 stockings and gifts for its in patient program. Greater Lakes Mental Health agency also received dozens of gifts for out-patients at the center there.
